Biography: Anne Marie Nakagawa is a Calgary-based writer and director. She has written and directed several long-form documentary films, as well as numerous experimental shorts that have played at festivals and galleries worldwide. Between: Living in the Hyphen, a National Film Board of Canada production, premiered at the Calgary International Film Festival in 2005 and went on to win an Alberta Motion Picture Industry Association Award, a Golden Sheaf Award at the Yorkton Film Festival and a Bronze Plaque at the Columbus International Film and Video Festival. In 2007, Between was broadcast on the Documentary Channel after being selected in 2006 to launch Sense of Belonging, the United Nation’s Association of Canada’s national initiative to combat racism and stereotype. Currently, Ms. Nakagawa is researching a feature-length documentary entitled Point of Return which examines how economics, sustainability and spirituality inform each other in an increasingly connected global society. In addition, she is writing a feature-length screenplay that was recently workshopped at Women In the Director’s Chair 2008 with Mentor Director Donna Deitch. Ms. Nakagawa remains active in grassroots initiatives and is directing her second film with the City of Calgary Department of Arts and Culture, documenting how low-income neighborhoods have changed as a result of arts-outreach programs within their communities, and how art can be a catalyst for community development.
