Biography:

 Welcome!

My name is Jay Black. I live in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

I am an Anglo-Canadian photographer and poet. Raised in southwestern Ontario and southern Alberta, I now live in Vancouver. I have a Flickr account where I go by the screen name The Blackbird. You can find some of my shots there. I'm good about allowing people to use my photos as long as permission is requested. I have a full-time unionized day job, so money I receive from the sale of my photos goes to the Evelyne Saller Centre, aka "The 44" which provides $2.00 (subsidized by BC Housing) meals to the Downtown Eastside destitute. Buy a photo for $100 and 50 broke and hungry people get a free lunch.

Recent photography clients include Pivot Legal Society, Homeless Nation, Artspeak, Megaphone Magazine, Briarpatch Magazine, the Dominion, the West Ender, The Tyee, the Globe and Mail, SharedVision, the BC Civil Liberties Association, Vision Vancouver and the City of Vancouver. I have still photos appearing in two documentary films made in my neighbourhood, The Way Home which examines the area's homelessness crisis and 100 Block with a focus on the community's open drug market. My application for accreditation with the BC International Media Centre was recently accepted and I will use it to cover 2010 Olympic-related stories, particularly with regard to social, economic, environmental and policing/security issues. My first photographic art exhibit will be at the new W2 community media arts centre during the Games. Please stop by and have a look if you're in town at the time.

Over the past few years, my poems, translations of them and my translations of contemporary French poetry have appeared in 25 literary and academic journals published in Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Northern Ireland, the United States and Wales.

Equipment:

Nikon Coolpix P5100 (12.1 mp) point-and-shoot and a Sony A350 (14.2 mp) DSLR with telephoto lenses on both; Velbon Sherpa 200R tripod.

Licensing

My photos are marked All Rights Reserved. Their use for any purpose without my written permission is an infringement of international copyright law. Please don't steal my shots. I will prosecute copyright infringement.
