Sir Joseph Rotblat became a catalyst for the non-nuclear proliferation movement when he walked away from the Manhattan Project in the name of world peace. After Germany fell to the Allies, he felt no need to continue working on nuclear weapons to win WWII. At the time he was critized and denounced, but his actions spurred on the foundation of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. In 1995, Rotblat and Pugwash were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their decades-long work.
