Meet the people involved in the fight to eliminate racism in the workplace.
What was once out in the open is now subtly hidden in the policies and practices of the workplace. CITIZENShift has teamed up with Human Resources Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) to explore the issue of racism at work. This dossier devoted entirely to issues surrounding racism in the workplace. Examine how direct and systemic racism adversely effect industry and economy. Meet players involved in the fight to combat, subvert, and eliminate workplace racism. Witness the journey from the making-of to the final cut of six provocative short films produced on the subject.
Update: After the huge success of this dossier (launched in 2006) and the series of videos created on the subject, we are happy to announce that a new series of films and a space for dialogue on the topic is currently in action!

Sociologist Carl James is the author of the book Making it: Black Youth, Racism and Career Aspirations in the Big City. In Toronto, James reconnects with five of the young Black women and men who were part of his study 20 years ago, providing him an opportunity to look back on the dreams and aspirations these men had as youths - as well as to look at what kinds of progress society has made when it comes to workplace discrimination. The women and men featured in the film have overcome racism and succeeded in their careers through sheer willpower and determination. They realize that they are role models in their community and feel the pressure to do their very best. Still, for Carl James, racism remains a complex reality that continues to affect the lives of many people.
