Work For All: Stop Racism in the Workplace

Meet the people involved in the fight to eliminate racism in the workplace.

What was once out in the open is now subtly hidden in the policies and practices of the workplace. CITIZENShift has teamed up with Human Resources Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) to explore the issue of racism at work. This dossier devoted entirely to issues surrounding racism in the workplace. Examine how direct and systemic racism adversely effect industry and economy. Meet players involved in the fight to combat, subvert, and eliminate workplace racism. Witness the journey from the making-of to the final cut of six provocative short films produced on the subject.

Update: After the huge success of this dossier (launched in 2006) and the series of videos created on the subject, we are happy to announce that a new series of films and a space for dialogue on the topic is currently in action!

Take a peak at the new Work For All website today!

I created this video for Surrey Urban Youth Project (SUYP), a community-based initiative designed to empower youth through the arts. It poses the question - how can discrimination exist in, so called, 'multicultural' societies?

This video was shown at an SUYP event on September 17, 2008, which also featured youth from around the city expressing themselves through graffiti, dance, spoken word, DJing, MCing, hip hop and painting.

by Muhammad Javed

Mon, 05/31/2010 - 21:52

I work in one of the nationwide food company in calgary plant, i was on vacation for one month and went back home, i suppose to come back to calgary on April 20, 2010 and reach here on April 21,2010 and back to work on April 22, 2010. but when i went to the airport on April 20,2010 to fly to calgary, the airline company toled me that my flight has been cancelled because of the valcano ash and heathrow airport is closed, the flight was going to Dubai and then from Dubai I suppose to go to London and then from there to Calgary, but they dont allow me to board the flight was on scheduled to Dubai and i was the only who was refused to board and advised me to go to Emirates airline office and contact them for further information and for next flight. I went to Emirates airline office and they said, we dont know when the flights will resume and I told them that I suppose to be at work on April 22,2010, they said we cant do any thing right now but we will try our best to give you a priority flight but we still have a big backlog to, and for employer we will give you a E-letter so you send it to your employer and they give me e-letter and I send my personal email explaining all my satuation and the stress i am going through on the same day April 20,2010, with the request to please acknowledge my email.

I did watever i can but the satuation was beyong my reach or controle, anyhow i got a message from the airline almost 2days before my flight that my flight is confirmed on May 6,2010 and i will reach Calgary on May 7,2010 which is friday, when i reach here arround 40:30pm, after the weekend on monday May 10,2010 i went to the Main office and asked if I start working, but my direct Manager toled me that you are terminated from work, because you didnot informed us, I toled him i send email to you and HR manager and Assisatant plant suprintandent, but he said yes we received that but after that we never heard anything from you, i told that, i was waitting for reply from my email to be acknowledged, but non of three send me any reply to acknowledge my email and he said you didnot showup, i said how i can showup while i was not in canada, then he said you are terminated if you want you can talk to the Union.

I went to The Union and they said ohh dont worry many people were stucked in the valcano ash I will try get you back to work asap, i said ok. she said she had meeting with HR manager on thrusday, then thursday afternoon she called me she said, ohh i was not able to changed their mind. bieng my Union representative she put all blame on me, which i dont understand untill now.
