We're talking trash! Take a look at where your garbage ends up, and what some green-thinking people are doing to change our throw-away culture.
"Out of sight, out of mind". That's the attitude of most people when it comes to garbage. We put our garbage out on the curb and someone comes and takes it away -- and it's not our problem anymore! But we all know that garbage has to go somewhere, and wherever it ends up it causes serious environmental trouble. In this dossier you'll experience a range of garbage and recycling issues and meet people who are finding solutions to the problem of waste in our culture. From dumpster diving in Australia, to 'e-waste' recycling in China, to Canadian environmentalists in action, we're bringing the issue of garbage back home to your doorstep. It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it! Contribute your media and voice now!
Tides Foundation, in association with Funders Workgroup for Sustainable Production and Consumption, as well as Free Range Studios, present a short documentary called “Story of Stuff”. This powerful piece sheds light on the linear system of production and consumption that makes up our finite planet. It links this system, beginning with our natural resources to the factory; from the factory to the store; from the store to our homes; from our homes to the garbage.
As we follow this string, a range of intricately connected heated topics arise, ranging from government and corporate agendas; to advertising, materialism and over consumption; to finite resources, hazardous chemicals, and factory conditions. Positive ways to change the current state of our rapidly deteriorating planet are also outlined, raising ideas around recycling, sustainability, equity, long living economies, green energy and the like, all in the hopes of calling us together to create a more just world; by rethinking and reclaiming this system, we can create something new.
