U.S. soldiers are going AWOL and coming to Canada. They want to stay.
Will this country give them refuge from a war they deem illegal?
U.S. soldiers are going AWOL and coming to Canada. They want to stay.
Canada must choose whether or not to give refuge to these Americans who refuse to take part in the US-led war on Iraq. They say the war is illegal under international law; and if returned to the United States, they face severe prison terms for desertion.
Hear the stories of war resisters in Canada and the US and find out how citizens on both sides of the border are fighting to end the war. Get a historical perspective - watch films and read about "peaceniks", draft dodgers and deserters of the Vietnam era. Leave your opinion, find out how to take action, come back and find out - will Canada let them stay?

Let Them Stay (Part 1) - Joshua Key's story
Private 1st Class Joshua Key describes one of the horrifying experiences in Iraq that led him to decide to go AWOL from the U.S. military. He alleges that war crimes are being perpetrated by U.S. military personnel in Iraq. The Canadian War Resisters Support Campaign works to support those who refuse to participate in the U.S. invasion, harking back to the Canada of Pierre Elliot Trudeau, who wanted Canada to be a "refuge from militarism".

I just finished reading "The Deserter's Tale." Where are all the "truth-seeking" journalists embedded in the units? Obviously worried more their hairstyle on camera than in actually informing the world about what is going on. This country is not what our founding father and mothers intended it to be. I have two nephews serving in Iraq right now, one is on his second tour. I wonder about the rest of their lives - the things they'll never be able to talk about and I worry every day that we'll get "the phone call." I hope the Canadian government and people will welcome the men and women who are brave enough to say the killing is wrong - our administration doesn't have the balls to admit it. Our political system is a circus with no ringleader, only clowns. War is about power and control - not about freedom.

I just finished reading "A Deserter's Tale". It was so compelling I read it in 6 hours. Many of the things he related resonated with me as my son was recruited while in high school into the Marine Corp. The recruiter came to our home to talk to me as my son was underage and needed my signature which I was reluctant to give. Much of what we were told was made to sound so good, but I don't trust our government and my son wanted to believe so badly he was going to go no matter what. He did not see combat, but he is truely changed and the military did it to him. He never talks about his military experience and has voiced to me that should they try to re-activate him( he is still in the inactive reserve) he would dissappear rather than go back. I think Joshua and others like him should have the right to follow their conscience which is more than the President and his supporters are doing. They for the most part have a lot of money and power to gain in this 'war on terror' while the disadvantaged in this country are becoming poorer due to the stresses on our economy which in turn forces more young people into service to be the 'warrior slaves' to an increasingly wealthy political machine. So many soldiers have been damaged, and their families and our society will all feel the effects for decades. I am glad Joshusa had the courage to tell his story. I would like to see others tell thier experiences and have the American people really understand what our own government is doing to the people in Iraq and the entire region. I have always believed that what we do to others we are doing to ourselves.
