Women Boxers In India: With This Ring

With This Ring is an independent documentary film by Ameesha Joshi and Anna Sarkissian. Since 2006, they’ve been tracking the Indian Women’s National Boxing Team, who are some of the best boxers in the world.

Monsoon season, here we come

After some time off regrouping, we’re back in production on our documentary. We’re now working as co-directors and have gotten some funding from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec. This summer, we’re returning to India to pick up where we left off.

We learned a lot from our missteps the last time. We know what to expect, we understand India’s bureaucracy, and we’re setting realistic goals. We’ve also benefited from having so much time to digest the material.

Summer is monsoon season but Ameesha said it shouldn’t be too bad. I should expect intermittent downpours throughout the day, and then a “steam bath” as she put it. I can’t really complain because she’s allowing me to bring a suitcase full of soy delicacies and flax. I’m also trying to convince her that a complete Tour de India is really in the best interest of the film, but no news on that yet.

Last year, the Limca Book of Records, India’s answer to the Guinness Book of World Records, contacted us about our project. World records are taken very seriously in India, according to The Guardian, it’s a national obsession. I’m not sure what category we would have been in, it all seemed a little strange. I guess we didn’t make the cut because we were never invited to an awards ceremony or anything and I didn’t get a copy of the book. (There’s always next year?) More importantly, Mary Kom is featured as one of five People of the Year. Quite a feat! Her entry mentions that she is “the first woman boxer to win the world title three years in a row after the championship was introduced in the USA in 2001.” We’re so proud.

We have a slightly updated edit of our demo on YouTube. This is the version that was screened in late January for films that have received help from the NFB’s Filmmakers Assistance Program (FAP/ACIC). Thank you to Pierre Lapointe for his continued support of our project.
