My name is Nivea de Oliveira and I am an environmental scientist and outdoor enthusiast who grew up in Quebec and Portugal. My initial adventures skiing, climbing and kayaking in the mountains of Quebec, the Rockies and the French Alps lead me to pursue a bachelor degree in Geography and Remote Sensing with a specialty in alpine and glacial environments in order to better understand the landscapes I so love. As I became conscious of the human footprint on the irreplaceable landscapes I enjoyed, I realized the importance of finding a balance between human resource use and the conservation of natural spaces for future generations. I went on to complete an interdisciplinary Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences. I have worked for Environment Canada evaluating the long-term effects of pulp and paper mill effluents on river ecosystems; as a researcher for municipal governments north of Montreal to produce a sustainable development plan for the region; and most recently, I worked with a non profit environmental group to identify methods for monitoring the ecological health of the “Crown of the Continent” landscape in Alberta and British Columbia.
I decided to join David on this trip because I believe that better informed people make better decisions. The fast transformation of northern Alberta seems to be happening beyond the awareness of a great number of people. Ultimately this will affect us all directly as we also have an obligation to leave a responsible legacy to the generations that follow us. I believe that doing this documentary I will raise awareness and help individuals rethink their consumption habits in light of the scarcity we will face if we don’t.

Hi Nivea,
Reflecting on David’s earlier post, good information and understanding of the consequences of political decisions are critical to democracy. The media can definitely help people make an informed vote and motivate them to lobby their government. I’m sure the film will help open people’s eyes and hopefully it will spark some debate and enrich our democracy.

Merci pour votre pensée Norm. En réalité, chacun des membres de l’équipe à joué un rôle lors du sauvetage de David. Nous avons pour la plupart une bonne expérience en glacier et David est homme solide. Je suis heureuse que vous preniez le temps de suivre notre progression et nos découvertes a travers cette aventure environnementale. Bonne continuation de voyage.

Je suis tombé par hazard sur ta page web et je t’ais reconnu, nous étions à la PDM ensemble. c’est bien de voir que des personne qu’on a cotoyé font des grandes choses, alors bravo et continu.

Eh oui, je travaille en environnement et crois que mon devoir est tout d’abord de m’informer si possible à la source, puis de partager cette même information au plus grand nombre et ce, afin que chacun soit en mesure de prendre de meilleures décisions. Je crois que localement le climat change et nous en subissons déjà les conséquences internationalement. L’accès aux ressources naturelles indispensables à notre survie telle que l’eau est déjà à la source de guère dans certain coin du monde. Le Canada possède une richesse qui prend rapidement de la valeur, l’accès à l’eau douce. Cependant, nos habitudes de consommation énergétique ainsi que le désir de satisfaire celle de nos voisins du sud, stimule l’accélération effrénée de l’extraction des sables bitumineux dans le nord de l’Alberta. Non seulement cette industrie stérilise le territoire que nous léguerons aux générations futures, elle consomme plus d’eau que la rivière Athabasca ne peut fournir. Cette industrie contribue non seulement aux changements climatique de par ses émissions de gazes à effets de serre, elle impacte directement la santé des communautés environnantes.
