The Verse City Workshop: A Career in Journalism?

This summer, in partnership with the East Metro Youth Services, the Verse City Workshop at Ryerson University’s School of Journalism will present a five-day intensive multimedia journalism camp. The Verse City Journalism Project at Ryerson University is designed to encourage youth from Toronto’s priority neighbourhoods to consider a career in journalism.

Donee!!! :)

So we’re completely FINISHED our story! We have finished editing, writing and mixing!

I’m pretty surprised, because we were on a rough start to begin with, suddenly changing our stories, then suffering from writers block.

But soon after we overcomed all that, stuff went by pretty fast.

Now, I gotta work on the article i’m writing about the camp.

Anyways, i’m looking forward to tonight and can’t wait for everyone to hear our stuff.

Get ready to listen to some seriousss banjo tunes.  :)

A Man’s life part 2

There comes a time in every mans life where you see that long hallway on the 4th floor and ask yourself this question…Is it really worth walking across that hallway just to go to the elevator? OR would staying in your dorm save you the risk of gettin bamboozled by a rioter on the streets. Gladly the riots are over(hopefully) and the rioters have found their bed cause clearly they didn’t know where it was. FYI, people need to keep their “Boots” and “Shirts” on when going outside..even if the centre is right across from the dorms. Like nobody wants to see those likkle hairs that you have on your chest like…….

my elbow smells like peanut butter!

so today Princess  is whining QUITE a lot…about her peanut butter smelling elbow (which i believe is annoying more than just me)

althou i believe there is more to the story than just her servants not taking care of her needs (apparently, there was something going on with Abigale’s toast knife and Princess’ sleeve…but i am not at liberty to divulge any more details)

now she believes that the world is out to get her and we are trying to kill her, WOWWW this princess needs to practice some introspection (yay! i got to use my new word!)

Quotes from the Princess:

“Are you guys done yet?” - Princess asks while she twiddles her thumbs and sits around doing NOTHING (today) while we (her slaves) finish the script and edit our story 8-)

*BANG! BANG! BANG!* “I’m using the shower at 8:45 tomorrow morning, you hear? EIGHT FORTY-FIVEEEE! If I see ANYBODY in that room, I’m going to kick you you out!” - Princess at 3 a.m. on Sunday night.

“Andy’s my bodyguard, he’ll protect me” - Princess says as she smiles widely.

“I thought Andy was my friend, I guess not. Looks can be decieving, that little punk! Let’s join forces and take him down!” - Princess at lunch after recieving some heart-breaking news.

“You might think somebody’s your friend, but next thing you know they may be plotting against you…” - Princess, referring to Andy (although ironically referring to herself at the same time.)

that’s the end of quotes from Princess for now…

What an exciting time to learn the ropes!

Journalists are a disgusting breed. When someone is murdered, it’s our ”once-in-a-lifetime chance” (There are umpteen chances.) to tell the brutal tale of how it all unfolded.  When anarchists, who seemingly come out of nowhere, cause millions of dollars in damage to the downtown core, we know that little else could provide the CEO of any major news corporation with a larger news boner - figuratively speaking, of course. (Note: I’m sure we could all speculate which horrible possibilities could result in even larger news boners, but we’re not in the business of speculation, or boner-comparison, for that matter.)  Setting cop cars on fire, smashing windows and hurling feces at mounted police officers makes for great story-telling. It’s not pretty, but that’s the business we’re in.

Having said that, it’s such a lovely weekend to learn the craft. Never would I have suspected such an eventful backdrop for this year’s Verse City camp. Yes, I realize hosting the G-20 is a big deal and all, but when planning a weekend of nighttime activities around a huge security zone that shuts down half of the downtown core, it seems more of a hindrance than a help.

As a reporting mentor, my task is to provide guidance to my assigned group of Verse City students. That is, I am to step back as they tell the story they want to tell, the way they want to tell it, interrupting only to make the odd suggestion and smooth out bumps.

I accompanied my group to Queen’s Park on Saturday, June 26, 2010 - a day that will forever live in infamy among Torontonians. However, when we arrived on government soil, things were, well, bland. We had arrived when various protest groups took to the streets to march out their concerns. I was worried the lack of people to interview would make for a crappy learning experience for the students. Approximately 20 minutes later, protestors returned and I watched my group in action: not quite fearless, but surprisingly skilled considering it was their first time accosting strangers for interviews.

Things changed drastically when a civilian checked her phone and informed us that protests on Queen St had turned violent. My group asked me if they could go and I, somewhat naively and irresponsibly, gave the okay. Luckily, the TTC was shut down and their tape recorder was nearly out of batteries. Shortly after, we were ordered back to campus, where we remained on lockdown and watched the chaos unfold on the TV screen.

As irresponsible as it would be for me to take these students to the scene of the riots, I can’t remember the last time I felt as proud as when my group asked me if they could go. That’s the sick-journalist-bastard instinct that, at times, seems to uncontrollably ooze out my pores. There is nothing more exciting than being in the midst of all the chaos. As journalists, we sometimes find ourselves in potentially dangerous situations. If my students had no one to answer to, they would have gone and covered a historic event. They, too, share this journalistic instinct and sense of morbid curiosity. I have every hope that they will pursue a career in media. We would be lucky to receive their perspectives.

A Man’s Life..

There comes a time in a mans life when there are no doors or windows so he walks through a wall. But eventually you decided to go through the ceiling because walking through a wall would just cause more damage than the G20 Summit itself.
