36 - Turned on and Tuned out: Radio in the digital age, by Russ Cooper

With the emergence of Internet radio, podcasts, and satellite radio, the new generation of the listening public has more choice and fewer reasons to wait for what they want to hear. Radio technology has shifted from passive waves floating through the air to a direct beam that listeners program themselves.

In this on-demand world, is AM/FM´s reign on the dial about to roll off the end of the tuner?

Featuring interviews with Brent Bambury and Kai Black (CBC Radio), Sara Saljoughi (CIUT, CKUT and Exclaim! Magazine), Simon Fournier (Sirius Satellite Radio), and Jeremy Morris (midnitepoutine.ca).

10 Great Podcasts for Elementary, Secondary and Middle School Students

Last week, a group of us, led by Nina Silver, brainstormed a list of podcasts that would work well in a classroom setting with elementary, middle and secondary school students.

Here they are:

SG Show - A family talks through their issues in this candid look inside their home.

Coffee-Break Spanish
- One of the many podcasts focused on language-learning. The idea is you can listen to the podcast on your coffee breaks and - you guessed it - learn Spanish.

Grammar Girl - ‘That’ or ‘Which’? Colon, or semi-colon? Short but useful tips and tricks to working with the English language.

Great Moments in Science - In this weekly podcast, Dr Karl guides us through history of scientific trials and tribulations.

Mister Manners Tips - ‘Quick and dirty tips for a more polite life.’

Homeless Nation - The official podcast of Homelessnation.org. A social network for Canada’s transient communities.

Cello Journey - Personal diary of a professional cellist.

Kay Ray - Free Audio Books.

Discovery News
- Award-winning programs and high-impact documentaries from the Discovery Channel.

Listen to your Kids - A great initiative by podcaster, Julien Smith. Kids call a number anonymously and say whatever they want. With any luck, parents listen. Mutual understanding ensues.

Podcamp Toronto Online

I notice that all the sessions from Podcamp Toronto are now available for viewing and downloading on the Podcamp site.

Watch them here.

It’s a valuable resource.  There’s a lot to sift through, but from the sessions I was able to attend, I recommend watching the following:

Building Your Personal Brand Through Podcasting - Mitch Joel

LibriVox: How to Get 2,427 People to Podcast for a Common Cause - Hugh McGuire

Using Podcasting in Secondary, Elementary and Middle Schools - Nina Silver

Citizen Journalism: Getting Started with Videoblogging - Tari Akpodiete

Atwater Digital Literacy Project - kids and podcasting - Hugh McGuire

Much more to come on Podcamp. We’ll be podcasting at least three interviews from the conference on the subject of Podcasting in the Public Interest: Hugh McGuire (Librivox), Jim Milles (SUNY Buffalo Law School) and Tari Akpodiete (community podcasting consultant and citizen journalist).
