I’ve never felt completely comfortable with the term, podcasting. But now I feel even less so.
Slashdot reports that Apple has written a cease and desist letter to PodcastReady for infringement of the term, pod.
This is a case of biting the hand that feeds if there ever was one. Podcasters will now have to consider redefining their medium. The term audiocasting adds two unweildy syllables to the descriptor, but it makes more sense - and best of all it’s in the public domain, which, to my mind, is more in the spirit of the medium it serves.
We’ll be watching this issue closely and, depending on the direction it takes, the CITIZENShift audiocast may be coming to an audio-emitting digital device near you.

What a remarkable experience I had last March while staying at Umoyo, a school for girls in Zambia, with students from Toronto.
I joined them to facilitate the filming of a documentary they were making about their experiences with their new peers, and each others’ lives. For me, it was a long-awaited opportunity to burst out of my bubble and face up to a difficult reality.
This podcast features music that we heard one Saturday night on the grounds of Umoyo. Young women from the school were singing – in full harmony - uplifting praises to their Lord. Once in their midst, I tried my best to sing and dance along with them. As I stood there it struck me more then ever how irrelevant my criticisms of religion are. These young women find such tremendous strength through their faith and I had to ask myself: Who am I to question that?
Instead, I was moved to tears.

This recording was made possible thanks to Nicola Luksic, the CBC producer that we were traveling with.
