Jane Doe Conference

A personal and political feminist narrative orchestrated in multiple voices. This blog takes place at the Sexual Assault Law, Practise and Activism in a Post-Jane Doe Era Conference–more affectionately known as–”The Jane Doe Conference”. This blog is inspired by Jane Doe–and all of the Jane Doe’s–and is an accounting of sorts of the presentations and discussions that will take place at this event from March 4-7, 2009.

Dear rapist: I am not changing my life because of a pathetic fuck like you, love the sisterhood

First off, I want to say thank you to the Garneau Sisterhood for showing me an alternative to police warnings; Alternatives such as: “Warning: Men- There is a rapist!” “Attention rapest, we are watching you, we will find you!”. For once, it questions the perpetrators instead of the victims.

In solidarity with you, I refuse to submit to police warnings; I refuse to stay inside, while the rapist is free to roam; I refuse to live in fear!

Together we can reclaim our right to public space. Preventing sexual assault is everyones responsability and telling me to be vigilant and to lock my door will not make me safe. Whats worse, is that it doesnt even come close to addressing the real problem.
