Mining Companies Given Green Light to Dump Waste into Canadian Lakes…WHAT?
When I saw the headline for Terry Milewski’s article “Lakes Across Canada face Being Turned into Mine Dump Sites” (June 16, 2008 - CBC News), it seemed far too extreme to be true. Yet, after reading the text it seems as though the story around this headline is complete fact. A grand total of 16 Canadian lakes from British Columbia to Newfoundland have been selected as waste dump sites for mining companies, including Imperial Metals. While it is claimed that the planned dams to hold such waste “tailings” will not cause any leakage into the lakes, I still find this whole concept to be disturbing, careless, and I am sincerely fearful of this new plan.
Being in the modern 21st century, we are informed on the dangers of pollution towards the environment. Along with the rising fears of global warming, it seems as though we have finally reached a point where we understand the changes that need to be made and are slowly making individual efforts to lessen our carbon footprints in an attempt to “live green”. Yet, this shocking article is just a painful reminder that not everyone is so willing to take part in environmental change for the better and Milewski’s article brings up the impression that we have taken one step forward and two steps back.
