Mining Companies Given Green Light to Dump Waste into Canadian Lakes…WHAT?

YouTube Preview Image

When I saw the headline for Terry Milewski’s article “Lakes Across Canada face Being Turned into Mine Dump Sites” (June 16, 2008 - CBC News), it seemed far too extreme to be true. Yet, after reading the text it seems as though the story around this headline is complete fact. A grand total of 16 Canadian lakes from British Columbia to Newfoundland have been selected as waste dump sites for mining companies, including Imperial Metals. While it is claimed that the planned dams to hold such waste “tailings” will not cause any leakage into the lakes, I still find this whole concept to be disturbing, careless, and I am sincerely fearful of this new plan.

Along with the rising fears of global warming, it seems as though we have finally reached a point where we understand the changes that need to be made and are slowly making individual efforts to lessen our carbon footprints in an attempt to “live green”. Yet, this shocking article is just a painful reminder that not everyone is so willing to take part in environmental change for the better and Milewski’s article brings up the impression that we have taken one step forward and two steps back.

2880 Film Blitz

This weekend from June 20th to the 22nd, DOC Canada is hosting its 6th annual 2880 Film Blitz in Montreal where student and professional filmmakers compete to write, shoot, and edit a film in 48 hours. Starting Friday night, all participants meet to find out a secret theme that must be integrated into their piece and then head off for a sleepless weekend to produce a film that must be finished and handed in by 7 pm on Sunday. Having competed in the Film Blitz for the past two years, I know firsthand what this unforgettable experience is like. I can sum it up as invigorating, unpredictable, and while always stress-inducing and sleep depriving, it is always worth it!
