Hello everyone,
I have not written in a bit as I was finishing up my thesis that was also focusing on Southeast Asia and education.
I am starting up again the stiff wheels to get funding for a film on trafficking and de-crim of prostitution in Canada, with a particular emphasis on Eastern Canada including Ontario.
Some interesting events coming up are:
First Woman of Philippine Literature to speak during Field national tour in Toronto and Montreal
(Canada) The Philippine Women Centre of Quebec is proud to announce two upcoming speaking engagements with National Book Award Winner and International Spokesperson of the Purple Rose Campaign, Ninotchka Rosca. On May 11, Ms. Rosca will be speaking at McGill University. She will also be giving a presentation at “Field” on May 12 at the Montreal Arts Interculturel Theatre (MAI).
The gala event is part of the Purple Rose Campaign, an international effort to end the sex trafficking of women and children with an emphasis on the situation of Philippine women and children. In her presentations at McGill University and “Field,” Ms. Rosca will be discussing such issues as sex tourism, trafficking, the mail-order bride industry, and violence against women and children.

Just back from Sydney Australia where I attended the OurMedia conference.
What a fabulous event, with people who work in independent or ‘Citizen’ media coming from all over the world to talk about their work.
Here’s the description from the official post conference letter:
Activists, media practitioners, community development workers, researchers and academics were the main participants of the OURMedia 6 / NuestrosMedios 6 international conference held in Sydney, Australia, from April 9 to 13, 2007. This conference followed those organized since 2001 in Washington, Barcelona, Barranquilla, Porto Alegre and Bangalore. Year after year the OURMedia network has expanded internationally covering all regions of the world. 200 people from 40 countries participated at the OURMedia 6 conference, presenting a variety of experiences and themes for discussion.
The OURMedia Network has become an important forum for dialogue on issues affecting participatory, community, alternative and citizens’ media and communication throughout the world. A central challenge has been that of building the legitimacy and recognition for the vital role of grassroots media and communication work within processes of social, cultural and political change. The network has provided a focal point for affirming the value of this contribution, and has enabled collaboration, exchange, research and activism on many issues, including freedom of expression, the right to communicate, and fairer access to the world’s media and communications resources for the betterment of all.
Of course I was there to talk about CITIZENShift, which was a huge hit, with many solid contacts and ideas sparked for further collaborations. I had the chance to show off the site on no less than three occasions; once within a conference session, then in a more opened workshop session where I showed some films from our recent WATER dvd and then discussed various issues around running the site (technical, copyright, editorial policies etc…).
I gave the final session out at the University of Western Sydney, where I was invited, along with media studies prof. and author Bob Hackett from Simon Fraser U, to participate in the guest lecturer series. Well, as Murphy’s Law would have it, the CITIZENShift site was down! Probably due to the installation of this here lovely new blog! So, I had to wing it, but it seemed to go very well actually, with lots of interest and discussion.
Really makes me proud to be working on this project, and to present within this awesome group of people who are committed to getting ‘citizen’ media of all sorts out to the publics that they truly represent. It was inspiring to be amongst such a group.
.
Sydney’s a really nice city too! After 5 days of full time conferencing was good to get out and spend a day at the beach!
(pix to come, yeah, I still shoot on film !)

A nice follow up to the last post, where we discussed the Open Source Cinema project.
Brett Gaylor was on CBC’s The Current this morning discussing the current state of documentary film-making; as docs become more successful and visible, insurance companies and lawyers are getting more involved in the creative process.
Show notes:
‘And that has some documentary makers questioning the future of their art — and the kind of investigating and exposing they can do. To talk about this we were joined by three people.’
Listen here.
