Real News Revolution

little-globe-and-mail.JPGLast week I attended a reception to introduce The Real News, a non-profit news, debate, and documentary television/internet network focused on providing independent journalism.

What makes The Real news so unique is that it will not accept corporate funding, government funding or funding from advertising. In fact the funding will come from viewer memberships. The philosophy is that without funding or influence from government, corporations etc, Real News will be able to produce unfettered journalism and reportage from around the world.

I’ve been following the progress of this project for about two years now so I really appreciated the opportunity to see the people who’ve been working hard on getting the project to this point, as well as hearing Paul Jay (CEO, Senior Editor and visionary behind this exciting project) speak about the journey and plans for the future. It’s really exciting to watch this endeavour near the finish line.
The Real News is based out of Toronto and will launch in September 2007.

Highlights from DemoCamp Montreal #2

I went to DemoCamp Montreal last night, which was very interesting. For those who don’t know, DemoCamp is a community get-together where developers share their latest products and ideas. They limit the floor to five presentations and there were a couple highlights that are relevant directly to CITIZENShift.

Open Source Cinema - This is the online component for Brett Gaylor’s documentary, Basement Tapes, which explores issues surrounding Creative Commons and remix culture.

There are a lot of production blogs for films now. Blogs where the filmmakers write a journal about the process of making their films - and these are important sites. But Open Source Cinema - strikes me as the only true production blog. It’s a site that allows its users to upload / edit / remix - and even re-write the film. Check it out; it’s a beautiful concept.

Collectik.net - Collectik is a site that allows users to organize and customize their podcast feeds. As a podcast lover myself, I’ve tired of downloading everything I’m subscribed to in iTunes; and it’s starting to take it’s toll on my hard drive disk space. Also, as a social network, Collectik allows users to see other listeners’ feeds.

Collectik feels like it’s the embroyo of a truly great idea, and it feels like it needs to take one step back to become slightly more holistic and inclusive. For instance, imagine a Collectik with video, that added all new videos that are tagged with X from YouTube to your feed. Podcasts are also dangerously Web 1.0. They are a very one-way medium; Collectik could add a community dimension to that - a sort of open source iTunes.

Very exciting ideas. BarCamp Montreal is coming up in April, check it out here.
